The fork at fifteen

Somewhere around the fifteenth year, an Ormond Beach heat pump reaches a point its owner can feel. The repairs get bigger. The summer bills creep. The technician starts using the word “compressor” in a tone that means something. In Hunter’s Ridge and Breakaway Trails, where the houses went up in the late 1990s and 2000s, this is happening on a whole neighborhood’s worth of equipment at once.

You can buy the system another year, and often that’s right. Or you can replace it on your schedule, in a month you choose, rather than on its schedule in August. This page is about the second path.

What a Cook’s install is not

It is not a like-for-like swap off the old nameplate. The system that cooled a house in 2005 may have been sized wrong then, and the house has changed since: new windows, a sealed attic, a Florida room added on. We calculate the load every time.

It is not an outdoor unit set at grade on a street that flooded in Ian and Milton. Along the Tomoka and the Halifax, on the low streets off John Anderson Drive, the stand is part of the install.

It is not a crew of strangers. Cook’s installers are employees, dispatched from the headquarters on Fairmont Lane in Palm Coast, and the same faces work Ormond Beach repeatedly.

And it is not a job that ends when the system turns on. It ends when the commissioning numbers are written down.

What it is

A Lennox heat pump, matched to a load calculation, installed with a new line set or a flushed and tested old one, a properly sloped and trapped drain with a float switch, a new disconnect, a thermostat that can run the equipment’s features, and an evacuation deep enough that the refrigerant goes into a dry, tight system. On beachside and riverfront homes it includes coated coils where available and stainless hardware. Everywhere in Ormond Beach it includes a conversation about surge protection, because the lightning here earns it.

Where the model qualifies, FPL’s Residential HVAC Program rebate for high-efficiency equipment is part of the paperwork. Ask whether Cook’s processes it as an enrolled contractor or you submit it yourself. [[CONFIRM WITH JERRY]] The federal tax credit on high-efficiency models is not available for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025.

The install visit, step by step

  1. Measuring visit. Rooms, windows, insulation, ducts, return, panel, old system’s history. Written quote follows, free.
  2. Scheduling. Usually within the week. Cook’s installs seven days a week, around the clock, so a Saturday is a normal option.
  3. Arrival and protection. Drop cloths, cleared path, power off at breaker and disconnect.
  4. Recovery and removal. Refrigerant recovered to a cylinder; old condenser and air handler out.
  5. Site work. Pad leveled or stand set; return enlarged if the quote called for it; drain re-run if the old one was wrong.
  6. Setting equipment. Air handler strapped and connected to duct; condenser set; line set run or flushed; brazed under nitrogen.
  7. Evacuation. Vacuum pulled and held to a verified micron reading.
  8. Charge and start. Refrigerant weighed in, trimmed to spec; thermostat configured; first start.
  9. Commissioning. Temperature split, static pressure, amp draws, drain flow, all recorded.
  10. Walk-through and warranty. Filter, thermostat, float switch explained; Lennox warranty registered; old equipment hauled off.

The hour the system spends under vacuum is the hour nobody sees and everybody pays for later if it's skipped.

What’s different on a beachside or riverfront install

From Ormond-by-the-Sea down A1A to Coquina Key, and along both banks of the Halifax through Ann Rustin Estates, the install adds steps. The condenser gets a factory coil coating where the model offers it, stainless fasteners and a stainless disconnect box, and a pad or stand placed to catch the least salt spray the yard allows. On the low streets around the Tomoka, the stand height is set from the water line the last storm left on the wall, with margin. Line sets are run where the next flood can’t reach the brazed joints. And the homeowner leaves with a hose-rinse routine for the coil, because a salt-air condenser that gets rinsed every few weeks lasts years longer than one that doesn’t.

Prep for the homeowner

  • Clear the path from the door to the air handler and the side yard to the condenser.
  • Move vehicles so the truck can back toward the work.
  • Put pets somewhere calm; doors will be open for hours.
  • Note the Wi-Fi password if a connected thermostat is in the quote.
  • If the house is a rental in Ormond-by-the-Sea, make sure someone with authority is reachable by phone during the day.
  • Decide where you want the thermostat. Install day is the cheapest time to move it.

What happens in year one

The spring after the install, a maintenance visit. Then one every spring and fall. Agreements make that automatic; ask about the tiers. [[CONFIRM WITH JERRY]] In between, filters monthly in summer and a glance at the drain outlet now and then. The system should get through its first fifteen years with far less drama than the last one did.

Heat pump installation questions from Ormond Beach

Can the new system go on a monthly payment?

Yes. Cook’s offers financing with monthly payments on new high-efficiency systems. We don’t print the lender or terms here because they change; the scheduler can lay out the current options when you call.

Is everything you put in a Lennox?

For new installations, yes. Cook’s is a Lennox dealer and installs the Lennox line, from the standard models to the variable-speed Ultimate Comfort System. We repair every brand, but we install the one we can stand behind completely.

Why a heat pump instead of a plain air conditioner with heat strips?

Because strips make heat by brute force and a heat pump moves it, at a fraction of the electricity. In a town with a few dozen heating mornings a year the difference isn’t enormous, but it’s real on the FPL bill, and the cooling side is identical. The heat pump costs little more and wastes much less.

What kind of drop on the electric bill is realistic from a new unit?

It depends on what you’re replacing. A 15-year-old system with a worn compressor and a dirty coil, swapped for a correctly sized high-efficiency heat pump, often shows a clear difference in the summer bills. A healthy ten-year-old system, less so. We’ll estimate from your actual usage rather than a brochure figure.
