Two half-replacements or one complete system: the Ormond Beach math
The outdoor unit dies in 2019, the air handler in 2025, and the homeowner in Ormond Lakes has paid for two installs, two crane days and a system that never quite matched. There is a cheaper way to spend the same money.

Two ways to spend the same money
Set them side by side for a 1990s house in Ormond Lakes with a system from the first owner:
| Piece by piece | One complete system | |
|---|---|---|
| Installs | Two, years apart | One |
| Equipment match | Mixed generations, mismatched coil and blower | Designed together, tested together |
| Efficiency | Whatever the weaker half allows | The rated figure on the quote |
| Warranties | Two clocks, two sets of terms, one often voided by the mismatch | One registration, one set of terms |
| Refrigerant | Risk of old and new generations in one system | One refrigerant, current generation |
| FPL rebate | Often not eligible for a partial | Eligible when the matched system meets the tier |
| Disruption | Two days of no cooling, two crane or trailer visits | One day |
Piece by piece feels cheaper on the day the condenser quits, because the bill is smaller. Over six years, with the second half failing and the mismatch costing efficiency every month in between, it is almost always the more expensive route in this climate, where the system runs nine months a year.
Read the warranty and the maintenance terms first
We put this before the equipment on purpose. A complete Lennox system carries manufacturer coverage on parts and the compressor that depends on the indoor and outdoor units being a registered match, and on the system being installed and maintained correctly. Buy a complete system and register it, and the coverage is straightforward. Mix a new condenser with an old air handler and the manufacturer has every reason to question a claim. Skip maintenance, and some terms allow the same. The cheapest insurance on a system that costs what a used car does is a maintenance agreement with the dealer who installed it: two visits a year, one at the start of cooling season in March and one before the November lull. Ask about current agreement inclusions and pricing. [[CONFIRM WITH JERRY]]

Why that matters more in Ormond Beach
Three local facts make the complete-system argument stronger here than in most of Florida. First, the housing stock: the median house dates to about 1984, and the systems in Woodmere, The Trails and Tymber Creek are often on their second or third partial replacement, with a 1990s air handler feeding a 2010s condenser. Second, the weather: salt from the Halifax and the ocean, 73-degree dew points and the lightning density of the Daytona area all shorten equipment life, so the halves fail out of step. Third, the floods: Ian and Milton took out ground-level condensers and garage air handlers on the same streets, and a house in Tomoka Oaks that replaced one half in 2022 and the other in 2024 now owns a mismatch it never chose.

Buying guidance
- Start with a load calculation, not the old tonnage. Most Ormond Beach systems were oversized the day they went in; a matched system sized to the house will be smaller and better.
- Choose the tier by the cooling season, not the winter. Two-stage or variable-capacity equipment dries the house better over nine humid months; single-stage is for a budget that cannot stretch, and we will say so.
- Decide placement at the same time. Elevated stand for the condenser on any flooded street, coated coil for any address east of US 1, and an air handler moved out of a 125-degree attic if there is a garage or closet for it.
- Add the accessories now. Filter cabinet, UV lamp, surge protection and a thermostat that can run a two-stage system are cheap inside a complete install and expensive later.
- Register everything on install day. We do it on the kitchen counter before we leave.
A complete system comes from our Palm Coast headquarters on one trailer and goes in on one day. Financing with low monthly payments covers the whole package, the FPL rebate is walked through on site (Cook’s enrollment with FPL: [[CONFIRM WITH JERRY]]), and the estimate is free. Call 866-266-5709.
Complete-system questions from Ormond Beach homeowners
What exactly counts as a complete system?
The outdoor unit, the indoor air handler or coil, the refrigerant lines, the thermostat and the accessories that make them work together, all selected as a set. Replacing the condenser alone, or the air handler alone, is a repair-scale decision, not a system.
My condenser is new but the air handler is from 1998. Can you match a Lennox to it?
We can connect to it, but it will not be a matched system: the coil, blower and refrigerant were designed for a different generation, and the efficiency and the warranty both suffer. If the 1998 unit is sound, we will say so; if it is not, replacing it with the condenser is the honest advice.
Does one complete system carry one warranty?
A matched Lennox system carries manufacturer warranties on the parts and compressor that are registered together, plus Cook’s labor coverage. The exact terms depend on the equipment tier and registration. Ask for Cook’s current labor warranty length on a complete install, in writing. [[CONFIRM WITH JERRY]]
Can a complete system run from a generator after a hurricane?
A properly sized standby generator can run it; a small portable one usually cannot start the compressor. If you have a generator or plan one, tell us at the estimate so we can size the system’s soft-start accordingly.
