Before day one: the call, the visit and the question

The call comes to 866-266-5709, answered any hour. A technician schedules a measuring visit, and the first thing that visit settles is whether a furnace is the right answer for this house at all. In Ormond Beach, with a few dozen heating mornings a year, a heat pump is often the better machine. A furnace wins when gas is already in the house, when the owner wants fast dry heat on the 25-degree mornings, or when a dual-fuel setup makes sense. We’ll say which.

If it’s a furnace, the visit measures the house for the heating load, checks the existing duct and return, finds the gas meter and traces the line, looks at where the vent can go, and reads the electrical panel. The written quote follows, free. Cook’s pulls the mechanical and gas permits; which office issues them for an Ormond Beach address versus a Flagler-side one in Plantation Bay is a question for the estimate visit. Day one, on the clock

7:15 a.m. Crew leaves 37 Fairmont Ln in Palm Coast with the furnace, the coil if the air conditioner is being replaced at the same time, venting, gas pipe and fittings, a new thermostat if quoted.

8:00 a.m. Arrival. Drop cloths from the door to the furnace location. Power off. Gas off at the meter.

8:30 a.m. Old equipment out: the furnace or air handler, the old flue if it’s being abandoned, the old gas flex.

10:00 a.m. Gas line. New black iron or approved flex run from the existing supply to the furnace location, sized for the furnace’s input plus whatever else is on the line. Shutoff and drip leg installed.

Technician pressure-testing a new gas line connection at a furnace
Day one ends here, with the gas line holding pressure overnight. Day two starts with the furnace.

1:00 p.m. Venting. For a high-efficiency furnace, PVC intake and exhaust through the wall or roof, sloped back to the furnace for condensate. For a standard-efficiency unit, metal vent to the roof. In a mid-century Ormond Terrace or Rio Vista house this is the step that takes planning, because the original chimney or vent path was built for a different furnace.

3:30 p.m. The gas line goes under pressure test and stays there overnight. The crew leaves; the house has the strips or the heat pump for heat until tomorrow.

Day two

8:00 a.m. Pressure test read and recorded. Gas line passes or gets fixed. Inspector’s visit coordinated if the jurisdiction wants to see the line before it’s covered.

9:00 a.m. Furnace set, leveled and connected to the supply and return duct. If the return is undersized, which it is in most 1970s and 80s houses from The Trails to Tymber Creek, it’s enlarged now. Condensate drain for a condensing furnace run and trapped.

11:30 a.m. Gas connected, electrical connected, thermostat wired. Gas valve pressure set to the manufacturer’s figure.

12:30 p.m. First fire. Combustion analysis at the flue, carbon monoxide reading in the house, temperature rise across the exchanger checked against the nameplate, blower speed set, static pressure measured.

2:00 p.m. Walk-through: thermostat, filter, shutoff valve location, what the condensate drain does, where the carbon monoxide detector should live. Lennox warranty registered. Paperwork with the commissioning numbers left with you.

Call for a furnace estimate

What’s in the truck that matters

A combustion analyzer, because a furnace that lights isn’t the same as a furnace that burns right. A manometer for gas pressure and duct static. A pressure test rig for the gas line. A camera for the old exchanger, so you can see why it’s being replaced. And the fittings and vent parts for the house we expect, plus the ones for the house we usually find.

What the crews keep finding in Ormond Beach

  • Gas lines sized for a water heater, now asked to feed a furnace too. Resized.
  • Vent paths through mid-century chimneys that no modern furnace can use. Re-routed.
  • Returns cut for a 1977 system, feeding a furnace that needs twice the air. Enlarged.
  • Attic ductwork crushed or disconnected since Matthew’s oak limbs came through in 2016. Repaired.
  • Rust at the base of garage furnaces that flooded in Ian or Milton. Elevated where possible.

Furnace or heat pump, settled honestly

Because the question comes up on nearly every furnace quote in Ormond Beach, here’s how Cook’s answers it. If the house already has gas and a working air conditioner of reasonable age, a new furnace is a clean, sensible replacement and the cheaper one. If the air conditioner is also near its end, a single Lennox heat pump that does both jobs is usually the lower total cost, and the FPL rebate for high-efficiency heat pumps tilts it further. If you simply prefer the feel of gas heat on a cold morning, a dual-fuel setup pairs a heat pump for mild weather with the furnace for the coldest days. The measuring visit lays out all three with your actual bills in hand, and the quote reflects the one you choose, not the one with the biggest ticket.

After the install

A November check the following year, and every year after. An agreement that pairs it with the spring cooling visit is available; details [[CONFIRM WITH JERRY]]. Financing with monthly payments covers new systems, though the federal tax credit on high-efficiency furnaces ended after 2025; Peoples Gas rebates are mostly for water heaters, so we won’t promise one on the furnace.

Furnace installation questions from Ormond Beach homes

Where does the furnace itself go in a house with no basement?

Where the air handler is now: a garage, a utility closet, occasionally an attic. In Ormond Beach the garage is most common and the easiest for venting and gas. An attic furnace is possible but adds access and venting work, and we’ll say so on the quote.

How long between signing the quote and the furnace lighting?

Usually within a week or two. The gas line and permit set the pace more than the equipment does. If gas has to be brought to the house by Peoples Gas, their schedule adds to ours, and we’ll tell you up front.

If the furnace fails in year three, who do I call?

Cook’s. The Lennox warranty, which we register, covers the equipment; Cook’s covers the installation under its satisfaction guarantee. One number for either.

Can a gas furnace be set in a manufactured home?

Only a furnace listed for manufactured housing, installed to its specific requirements for venting, combustion air and duct connection. Cook’s does these installs; say the house is manufactured when you call so the right equipment is quoted.
